Care Guides
Light: Succulents need as much light as possible!
For indoor succulents:
- South facing windows are best because they get the most light overall
- A sunny window that gets afternoon or morning sun
- Avoid north facing windows
- Grow lights are relatively cheap and a great option to keep your succulent looking nice in low light areas of your home
For outdoor succulents:
- Direct morning sun with indirect afternoon sun is ideal (the sun can get pretty intense in the summer months in the afternoon, even for succulents!)
- Direct afternoon sun can be okay if the plant is slowly acclimated to the conditions
- Shade cloths (50% shade) can also be used to protect delicate succulents from hot afternoon sun exposure
Watering: Believe it or not, succulents do need water!
Growing season (usually spring - fall for most species): water when the soil is completely dry. Water thoroughly and deeply to ensure the plant forms deep healthy roots. Always make sure your pot has a hole in it. Do not use a soil medium that doesn't dry out completely in a week, add more gritty substrate if this is an issue.
Dormant season (usually winter): water lightly every 1-2 months when the leaves start to wrinkle.
Feeding: Your plant won't flourish without food!
Growing season (usually spring - fall for most species): Feed using liquid cactus fertilizer as part of one of your waterings up to once per month.
Dormant season (usually winter): do not feed until the plant has awoken from its dormancy period.
